The business world has changed dramatically over recent years, and this is due in part to the internet. In the past, niche businesses really struggled to survive in a bricks and mortar establishment. People either did not know that they were there, or knew they were there but did not need their services.
With the internet though, these niche businesses can survive and thrive. This is because firstly, they do not need a physical presence on a high street, and secondly, it is possible to find them by simply searching for a term. As an example, people interested in baby Christmas ornament can now simply search online for them. As you can imagine, a shop specializing in these products would not last year around on a Glasgow high street!
This means that not only has the business world been changed, but also the way that consumers search for and buy products. People are far more accustomed to buying things online now, and for some it is second nature.
This in turn, has meant that those stores which are not necessarily niche stores, and have many walk in customers anyway have also developed a piece of virtual real estate. Almost every company you can think of now has a website you can use to order products or services from.
What lays in the future? Certainly, the online retail industry will continue to grow bigger. It may turn out that chain stores decided to switch from being places that hold stock, to become something similar to showrooms instead. We will have to wait and see!
